The Art of Story Telling (or Don't Give Up)

Storytelling is an art. Like music it must be pleasing to the ear while evoking emotion. Like a painting, it must create an image in the reader’s mind. Like other types of art, it will have its critics, but at the end of the process of storytelling there is a unique piece of art. But it is also work. Either a full-time job if you aspire to be a professional or a few hours a week as a hobby so that you can say “I created a story.” Most likely it will be somewhere in between.

Sitting back and watching someone else enjoy your story is a wonderful feeling but it does not come easily. You will spend hours frustrated that progress has been roadblocked, or that you have pages and pages of revisions to do. The process of taking an idea from your head and turning it into a polished finished story on paper is as hard as any job but with no satisfaction until the job is finished.

Don't give up.
